So my laptop is fucked. Last April, I opened the clamshell to find the screen colours inverted so it had to go to MacSys to have the screen replaced. I don’t recall blogging about it at the time, but basically they told me it was going to be a month or so, then a week later called back and told me they’d been able to get a part and it was ready to pick up. As soon as I got it home, I noticed the screen was filthy - internally - so I couldn’t clean it properly, and it was significantly darker than before. I had too much work to do so I motored on, intending to bring it to the Genius Bar next time I was in London.
Well London never came so I just kept using it - then a few months later another fault developed where sometimes, when I opened the screen from sleep, about 75% of the display was just blocks of inverted colour - but closing the lid and booting from sleep again fixed it. Again, I had far too much to do so I just keep at it - probably quite an idiotic move on my part, but I didn’t trust MacSys to fix it and didn’t really have any other option given that Apple no longer courier from anywhere other than Authorized Service Providers (ie. MacSys).

Over the weekend, the fault became permanent. Today, I had to suck it up and call Apple - basically explained the story that filled the previous two paragraphs, and they sympathized and said that they’d replace the screen free of charge (despite it being well out of warranty) - the only catch being I had to take it to MacSys for them to courier it as I couldn’t. I called MacSys immediately after to confirm this was going to be alright - they questioned why I didn’t want them to repair it and I avoided kicking off - and the next step is now to take it to them - hopefully tomorrow - to get it sent off.
I was in the midst of a bunch of client work, as well as my own personal stuff - including editing photos off my new D80 in my new version of Aperture and potentially live-blogging the Blog Awards this weekend, but it doesn’t look like thats going to be happening now. Hopefully everything will run smoothly tomorrow at MacSys and I’ll be back in business as soon as possible - but for the next few days I plan to rediscover the outdoors, spend some quality time with my girlfriend, and read a few books.

Hi Andy, Nothing has arrived so it may have been snaffled by my ISP’s spam filters. Can you resend as I’ve turned the spam filters off on this account.
a drunk friend fell on it (while under warranty, thank god)
I’m very sorry about your computer. But at least your friend was under warranty, right?
