New Years Resolu-aims

I’ve never really been one for making “new years resolutions”. I believe that if you want change so greatly in your life that you can initiate it on-demand - and making something up at the New Year or waiting for it to roll around to act as catalyst is not an effective means of making satisfactory commitments. I do have some goals for the coming year - not resolutions per-say - more realistic aims for things I’d like to do in the immediate future …

Travel & see more of the world. I’m in Gap year mode two years too late it would seem as recently I’ve gotten a real urge to start traveling. I’ve always been a bit of a geek for architecture, so I’d eventually like to have seen as much of Europe (particularly Eastern Europe) as possible - and also Toyko, Hong Kong, Australia and America have all entered the wishlist this year. Some financial sense and a pending 21st birthday should be enough to ensure I get at least a few adventures.

Feel better physically. It sounds like the ramblings of a regretful evening of overindulgence, but as of a week ago I’m no longer drinking. The goodonpaper Diet will no longer be receiving any air-time as it didn’t work out to be an effective approach, but exercising a little more and cooking again now I’m in a flat with a decent kitchen would be welcome attributes to the new year.

Be more musically adventurous. 2007 was a bad year for me and music. My OiNK account got banned, then OiNK itself went under, so downloading new music or even finding the time to listen to it properly didn’t half happen as much as I would have liked. This year, I’d really like to start correcting that - read more music blogs, demand more recommendations and mix CDs, go to more gigs - whatever I can to restore my musical prowess.

Make something of worth. My time at Queen’s Radio has spiraled into a mess of administration and paperwork, which I’m determined to offset this year with as many new and creative projects as humanly possible. Improving already existing projects to a somewhat more satisfactory level too - like goodonpaper, Scene Around Six etc - is something I definitely plan on working on, and I’m committed to improving my photography over the course of the year too.

In terms of music, check out Chris Schleifer’s SSX. It is for real musos and you will find some really obscure stuff. I have been using it for about 2 years.
