The Dark Knight (2008)

rating

For what is a comic book story, with comic book characters and a comic book plot, this film felt totally realistic and the characters totally convincing (especially Ledgers’ Joker). Action-packed to the core, totally enthralling and emmersive - everything you could want from a Batman movie - without question the best yet by miles. It’s takes you to see The Dark Knight to understand what I mean by “flawless, but not perfect” - but still brilliant enough to sitting with a well deserved 5.

The only thing I take issue with is the use of ‘comic-book’ to denote simplicity.

Don’t confuse the medium with the genre.

I wasnt suggesting simplicity, rather that comics can be quite ridiculous and far-fetched, and the movie does well to tie the concepts down to a “serious” (no pun intended) film while still retaining the charm of the original ideas.

My point being that EVERY medium has the potential to be ridiculous and farfetched - comics are no more prone to this than anything else.

The vast majority of comics I read aren’t superhero related, but are still as valid representations of the medium. It is a bit odd that one genre has come to define a medium though.

It would be like mistakenly assuming that all music sounded like Meat-Loaf, or all movies were knockabout comedies starring Steve Martin.

Then by “comic-book”, I mean specifically the original Batman comics. Is that slightly more suitable?

I suppose so… sorry for being such a pedantic wee bitch. It’s just something that I genuinely care about.

That being said, when Batman first appeared in the 40s, he had no qualms about killing bad guys. With a gun.

What a dick.

Not at all - it’s what comment systems were made for!
